Children in UK

Activities

Provide a Homework Club - This is with a view to helping refugee children with the core subjects in school, that is, English, Mathematics and Science. The refugee children often need additional support since English is not their first language and they are therefore much slower to understand what is being taught.

After School Activities - These activities give refugee children a chance to be involved in extra curricula activities such as music, dance, drama and story telling, which promotes their culture, introduces them to new ones, builds their self confidence and self esteem as well as allowing them to interact. This will also be an opportunity of teaching them how to live in England.

Guardian Workshops - These are small workshops, which encourage parents to take keen interest in their children's education, learn new information, address issues of concern about school, and obtain general advice and information. These workshops will also encourage parents on to make new friends to avert loneliness. Parents are invited to attend two evaluation sessions to give them the chance to have their say on the groups and discuss how the groups benefit their children.

Trips & Outings - The project organizes trips that allow refugee children to travel around England and increase their awareness about the UK.

The Caring Hearts for Africa's Disadvantaged Children will have a coordinator and who will ensure that the above activities are achieved. We also employ two part time teachers and volunteers, many of whom are trainee teachers. The homework clubs meet twice a week after school and the other activities will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays.
